SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (October 6, 2012) – The Vassar College men's soccer team broke a tight game open with three second-half goals during a 4-0 Liberty League win over Skidmore College Saturday afternoon at Wachenheim Field.
The Brewers improve to 7-4-1 and 2-1-1 and will next host Hobart College on October 12 at 4 pm in their first home game since September 22. The Thoroughbreds fall to 8-3-1 overall and 3-2 in Liberty League play and will next host Oneonta State on October 10 at 4 pm.
Vassar took a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute when a long throw-in by senior
Zander Mrlik was tipped in the box to senior
Dante Varotsis who redirected the ball to freshman
Jordan Palmer. Palmer scored from three yards out on the play.
Skidmore's best chance of the first half came in the 36th minute when Andy Ringler shot from 25 yards out but was saved by junior Vassar keeper
Ryan Grimme who deflect the shot over the net to keep it 1-0 at the break.
The Brewers made it 2-0 in the 52nd minute when sophomore Zachary Nasipak collected a loose ball in the box off a corner kick to score his second goal of the season. Varotsis sent sophomore
Tom Wiechert in on a breakaway for the third Vassar goal at the 56th minute.
Junior
Evan Seltzer scored the fourth and final Brewer goal in the 77th minute when he broke through the Thoroughbred defense and caught the far side of the net from just inside the box.
The Brewers had an 18-7 shot and 4-2 corner advantage. Grimme finished with five saves for Vassar while Eli Kisselbach and Danny Ebenstein had three saves each for Skidmore. Kisselbach allowed three of the four goals.
