Men's Soccer to Host RPI In Liberty League Championship Game On Saturday

Vassar advances to its second straight Liberty League Championship game.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (Nov. 1) -- The Vassar College men's soccer team will defend its 2011 Liberty League Championship title on Saturday afternoon, November 3 at 1:00 pm at Gordon Field.  The No. 1 seeded Brewers will host No. 2 RPI in the championship game. Vassar advanced with a 3-1 win over No. 4 Union on Thursday afternoon.

Vassar Notes: The Brewers (12-4-2) defeated Union 3-1 behind two goals from Tom Wiechert on Thursday afternoon. The victory sent the No. 1 seeded Brewers to the Liberty League Championship for the second straight year.

The Brewers are led in scoring by Tom Wiechert, who has nine goals, four of which have been game winners. Juliano Pereira,  has eight goals and two assists. Three of Pereira's goals have been game winners.. Zander Mrlik leads the team in assists with nine. In goal, junior Ryan Grimme sports an impressive 10-2-2 record and a 0.73 goals against average. He has made 54 saves. Vassar ranks in the top two in seven Liberty League team statistical categories.

RPI Notes: RPI is coming off a dramatic 3-2 victory over St. Lawrence in its Liberty League semifinal game. RPI secured the victory on penalty kicks. The Engineers (10-4-2) are not an especially high scoring team, only tallying 21 goals on the season, but 13 have come in the second half. RPI is among the strongest defensive teams in the league. Opponents have only tallied 14 goals. Marc Kozol leads the team in scoring with four goals and two assists. In all, 11 RPI players have scored goals this season. Rob Dewald has an 8-4 record in goal and a meager 0.53 goals against average. He has 54 saves on the season.

Last Game vs. RPI: The game remained scoreless until junior Juliano Pereira celebrated his fifth goal of the season when he snapped a hard header for the game-winning goal at the 58:09 mark.

Vassar Head Coach: Andy Jennings is in his 22nd season at Vassar. Jenning was named the Liberty League Coach of the Year on Thursday, adding to his 2009 Liberty League Coach of the Year title. He led the Brewers to the Liberty League Championship in 2011 after defeating the number one team in the nation in the semifinals. With the win, the team advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 1999.

RPI Head Coach: Adam Clinton is in his 10th season at RPI.
