Women's Swimming and Diving Beats Clarkson; Loses to WPI In Season Opener

WORCESTER, MA (October 27, 2012) – The Vassar College women's swimming and diving team defeated Clarkson University 229-59 and lost to Worcester Polytechnic Institute 161-138 in their 2012-13 season opener Saturday.

Sydnie Alquist won the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:05.68 and took second in the 100 yard freestyle (58.18) to highlight the swimmers. Kelly Wilkinson took second in the one-meter diving (197.40) and third in the three-meter (166.95) while Jane Cardona took second in the three-meter (174.07) and third in the one-meter (179.25) to lead the diving squad.

The Brewers, now 1-1, will next host Skidmore College in a dual meet on November 3 at Kresge Pool at 1:00 pm. WPI (2-0) will next host the New England Invite on November 3 and Clarkson will host St. Lawrence on Friday, November 2.

“This was a good start to a season despite not posting the best times," said head coach Lisl Prater-Lee. "There was a lot of energy from both the men and women and we're excited to host Skidmore next Saturday because over the years we've developed a sort of a rivalry with them.”

Shannon Sara won the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:20.49.Lilliana Frye won the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 58.00 and took second in the 50 yard freestyle (26.73). Juliana Struve took first in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:15.60 and third in the 200 yard breastroke (2:43.26).

Mildred Nelson and Marie Schmidt took second and third in the 1,000 yard freestyle with times of 11:27.30 (Nelson) and 11:29.71 (Schmidt).

Schmidt also took second in the 200 yard backstroke (2:24.04). Anna Kuo took third in the event (2:28.75).

“The women have seven new members and today we found out what they can do and what we need to work on,” Prater-Lee said. “The meet went very well since it is a new pool and it was the first time we've seen Clarkson in a regular meet.”

Other second place finishes were Sara in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:41.97), Olivia Harries in the 500 yard freestyle (5:35.05), Maryam Pourmaleki in the 100 yard butterfly (1:05.17), the 400 yard freestyle relay team of Harries, Schmidt, Robin Lam and Frye (3:56.77) and the 200 yard medley relay team of Harries, Kuo, Pourmaleki and Frye (1:59.52).
