Field Hockey Blanked By Scranton, 3-0, In Non-Conference Game

SCRANTON, PA (October 23, 2012) – In a game played with a steady rain, the University of Scranton scored all of its three goals in the first half, en route to defeating the Vassar College field hockey team 3-0 on Tuesday evening at Fitzpatrick Field.

In registering the victory, the host Royals scored all their goals in the game's first 30 minutes and held the Brewers to only three shots on goal in the game.

Vassar falls to 7-8 on the season. Scranton improves to 12-5. The Brewers will conclude the 2012 season on Saturday, October 27 with a road Liberty League contest against Union. Scranton travels to Juniata on Sunday, October 28 for a 1:00 pm game.

The Royals got on the board just 2:54 into the contest when senior forward Gretchen Kempf scored her 14th goal of the season, stick handling her way past a Vassar defender and past junior goalie Maggie Brelis on the left side.

Scranton increased its lead to 2-0 at 24:42 when Laura Megargel tallied her fourth goal of the season, connecting on a blast inside the arc off a penalty corner.

The Royals finished the game's scoring at the 29:51 mark of the first half, capitalizing on another penalty corner. Kempf assisted junior Jennifer Conroy on her fourth goal of the season on a shot inside the top of the arc.

Brelis made eight saves in goal. Scranton sophomore goalie Krista Mundy made two saves in the victory.
