POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 17, 2012) – The Vassar College women's soccer team snapped their losing streak with a 3-0 win against Rutgers-Newark Wednesday evening.
Vassar freshman goalkeeper
Emma Nichols got her first collegiate start and shutout today. Sophomore
Kim Kogler scored her first goal of the season in the seventh minute of play for the game-winner.
The win gives the Brewers a record of 9-6 and will next host University of Rochester on Senior Day, Saturday, October 20 at noon. Rutgers-Newark falls to a record of 4-13-1 as they next will host William Paterson on Saturday at 7:30 pm.
Junior
Gavriella Kaplan passed from 15 yards outside of the box across to towards the right post, forcing Rutgers-Newark goalkeeper Mercedes Lois to chase after it. Kogler intercepted the pass and shot it into the left side of the net for the game-winner.
Freshman
Lucy Brainerd got her third goal of the season when she drove the ball 20 yards by herself just outside of the left corner of the box and lofted it into the back right side of the net.
Kaplan got the final goal of the game (third of her season) when freshman
Becca Olson passed from the left side of the box to where Kaplan was waiting in the center. Kaplan dribbled a couple of feet before popping the ball into the left corner of the net.
Nichols had four saves in her shutout while Lois had seven saves in the first half before being swapped out by Victoria Nunez in the second half. Nunez had two saves. Vassar outshot Rutgers-Newark 26-9.
