NEW PALTZ, NY (October 12, 2012) – SUNY New Paltz scored the first five goals of the game, and kept the Vassar College field hockey team off the scoreboard until the 61st minute of play, en route to a 5-3 victory over the Brewers on Friday evening in non-league play.
The Hawks scored quickly, getting the game's first two goals – both by junior Danielle Conklin – within the first 17 minutes of action. Vassar was limited to just seven shots in the contest, with only one coming in the first 35 minutes of play.
The loss drops Vassar to 7-5. SUNY New Paltz improves to 10-4. Vassar returns home to face Rochester in Liberty League action next Friday, October 19 at 4:00 p.m. The Hawks travel to SUNY Oneonta next Friday for a 4:00 pm SUNYAC contest.
The Hawks went into halftime leading 3-0 and stretched that lead to 5-0 off goals from freshman Jessica Caruana and sophomoreAlex Gallo.

Rebecca Smith got Vassar on the board at the 61st minute, scoring her team-leading 6th goal off an assist from freshman
Haley Merritt. Smith's goal came off a crossing pass that beat Hawks goalie Alayna Wageman on her right side.
Vassar's next two goals were an “own goal” (a tally that bounced off the New Paltz goalie) at the 65th minute mark. A minute later, sophomore
Enya Cunningham tallied her fifth goal of the season to cut the New Paltz lead to 5-3.
New Paltz led in shot 24-7. Vassar held an 8-6 advantage in penalty corners.
