HARTFORD, CT (January 12, 2012) -- The Vassar College men's swimming and diving team traded leads in the early stages but eventually fell to Trinity College 163-131 in a close meet on Thursday.
“They got up and were able to grab points to keep the meet close but it didn't work out,” said head coach
Lisl Prater-Lee. “It was encouraging that they stepped up and won some events.”
The Brewers compete in the Kumpf Invitational hosted by RPI on Saturday, January 14, at 12:00 p.m.
Vassar went up 13-4 with a one-three finish in the 200-yard medley relay.
Vassar freshman
Frank Driscoll built on that lead with a win in the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:36.76. “Frank was ahead and then behind so it was an exciting comeback win,” said Prater-Lee.
Vassar took first and third in the 100-yard backstroke as
Luc Amodio finished in 57.95 and
Chuck Hermann clocked in at 1:01.4.
In the 50-yard freestyle, Mathue Duahney took first in 22.90 and
Matt Weiss was fourth in 24.17.
The Brewers went one-three-five in the 200-yard backstroke as
Nick Veazie took first in 2:08.90,
Kevin Lee placed third in 2:15.05, and
Ian Madison was fifth in 2:24.73. “We netted 13 points and the meet was still close and going back and forth,” said Prater-Lee.
In diving,
Greg Sullivan won first on both boards with a score of 299.85 in the 3-meter event and a score of 267.75 in the 1-meter event.
Rory Moon scored a lifetime-best of 122.18 for third in the 1-meter and Rafael Ricuarte notched a 120.38. “Rory and Raf have shown steady improvement and they stepped up today,” said Prater-Lee.
