POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 30, 2011) -- Behind a hat trick from sophomore
Juliano Pereira, the Vassar College men's soccer team improved to 2-0 in the Liberty League with a 4-1 win over Clarkson University on Friday afternoon at Gordon Field.
Pereira scored his first goal in the 33rd minute and Vassar never relinquished the lead as it added three goals in the second half and limited Clarkson to two shots on goal for the game.
“Our movement and our energy was top notch,” said head coach
Andy Jennings. “It was a very good team performance against a hard-working Clarkson team.”
The Brewers (7-2-1, 2-0 Liberty) host the top-ranked St. Lawrence University on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Gordon Field. The Golden Knights (3-6-1, 1-1) face Bard College on the road on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
“We're playing the number one team in the country tomorrow and we have nothing but respect for their program, but it's always great to win the first game of the weekend,” said Jennings.
After a series of quality scoring opportunities for Vassar in the early stages, Pereira nailed a header on a cross from junior
Ross Macklin to put the Brewers up 1-0 in the 33rd minute.
Vassar wasted no time in the second half with a goal in the 47th minute as freshman
Tom Wiechert volleyed in a rebound on a shot by
Sam Erlichson McCarthy in the box.
Clarkson pulled within one goal in the 53rd minute as David Maiorino blasted a free kick that deflected off the wall and faded from left to right into the goal.
Two minutes later, Vassar responded with a goal on a laser beam of a shot by Pereira from 25-yards out for a 3-1 lead in the 53rd minute. Pereira added Vassar's final tally ten minutes later with a bending free kick into the upper right corner from just outside the box.
“Juliano had three classic goals, they were all top quality,” said Jennings.
