MORRISVILLE, NY (September 30, 2011) – Sophomore midfielder
Rachel Waldman scored her first intercollegiate goal 52 seconds before halftime and sophomore goalie
Maggie Brelis knocked aside 12 shots as the Vassar College field hockey team blanked Morrisville State 2-0 on Friday afternoon.
In a game that was evenly played statistically, Vassar secured the victory when senior midfielder
Maura McCarthy scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season at the 62:09 mark. Waldman had her goal assisted by senior forward
Emily Maier while sophomore midfielder
Kerrin Poole assisted on McCarthy's tally, one that was a sweeping move on the left post of the goal off a corner drive.
The Brewers, now 5-4 on the season, will return to action next Friday, October 7, with a Liberty League road contest against Williams Smith at 4:00 pm. Morrisville drops to 0-8, and seeks its first win of the season against Rochester tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
"Everyone on our team played great today, it was a total team effort," said head coach Cara Dunn. "It was great to see Rachel get her first college goal and our team was really relentless today."
The Mustangs out-shot the Brewers 24-23, but couldn't slip one past Brelis, who made eight second half saves. While the teams tied in penalty corners at 10 apiece, it was Vassar's aggressive play in the first half that set the tone. The Brewers had 16 first half shots and for the game, Maier set a career high with 12 shots.
The second half saw a flip in action as the Mustangs had 17 shots, but Brelis was equal to the task. Her 12 saves equals her previous season high set against Manhattanville on September 10 in the Betty Richey Championship game. Her 12 saves marked the fourth time in her career she has a double figures save game.
Morrisville State freshman goalie Laura Blumenfeld played admirable in defeat, making seven saves. Junior forward Rebecca Meyer had seven shots for the Mustangs, four of which Brelis stopped.
