POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 3, 2011) -- Behind a hat-trick from senior Maura McCarthy, the Vassar College women's field hockey team defeated Keystone College 4-3 on Saturday at Weinburg Field for its first win of the season. The Brewers went down 2-1 in the first half but scored three unanswered goals and preserved the lead despite surrendering one late goal.

Vassar played the aggressor with a 26-9 edge in shots and a 14-5 advantage in corners but Keystone keeper Mary Grace Piazza kept the game close with 13 saves.

The Brewers (1-1) host Smith College in the Betty Richey Tournament this Friday, September 9 at 5:00 p.m. The Giants (0-2) next face Arcadia University on Thursday, September 8, at 4:00 p.m.

Vassar evened the score at 2-2 with less than a minute in the half as senior Maura McCarthy collected the ball in the mouth of the goal, was stuffed by Keystone keeper Piazza on her first attempt, and then slapped the convenient rebound into the open goal.

Seven minutes into the second half, senior Emily Maier made a spin in the circle, faded to her right and ripped a shot. Keystone keeper Mary Grace Piazza made a kick save but Rebecca Smith cleaned up the rebound with a hard shot to lower right for a goal to put Vassar ahead for the first time in the game, at 3-2.

Following a corner with 11 minutes remaining in the contest, a long pass into the box deflected off a Keystone stick and McCarthy one-timed the ball on the fly for her third goal of the game to give Vassar the 4-2 lead.

Keystone pulled within a goal as Katie Darling took a shot from top of the circle and Samantha Morgan redirected into the left post to bring Keystone within a goal at 4-3 with just over two minutes remaining. Time expired without another threat.

McCarthy led all scorers with three goals for Vassar. Kelsey Drozda scored Keystone's first two goals.

Sophomore Maggie Brelis made three saves to earn the win for Vassar.
