POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 21, 2011) -- The Vassar College women's soccer team had plenty of scoring opportunities but needed only one goal for a 1-0 clean sheet against Mount Saint Mary on Wednesday at Gordon Field.
Sophomore
Kylie Ladenberger broke the stalemate with a goal in the 78th minute on an angled shot over the keeper to the far post from the left corner of the box.
The Brewers (5-3) begin Liberty League play this weekend, hosting Rensselaer on Saturday, September 24, at 2:00 p.m. The Knights (5-2-1) play Purchase on the road this Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
Vassar controlled the offensive end with a 17-10 advantage in shots and a 5-0 edge in corner kicks. The Brewer forwards were active up top and made well-timed runs to set up several one-on-ones with the keeper. However, the Mount defense came up with goal-saving stops on each of these opportunities.
In the 14th minute, Ladenberger went on a breakaway down the middle of the pitch but Mount goalie Jacquelyn Mancini charged early and made a critical stop. Early in the second half, sophomore
Sheeva Seyfi found space on a through ball, side-stepped the rushing keeper and shot for the open net but Mount defender Kim Castro raced in from behind and lunged to block the attempt.
Mount nearly tied the game in the 86th minute with its best chance of the game as Erin McKeon struck a shot from just outside the box off the inside of the far post. The ball deflected off in front of the goal and Vassar held on for the win.
Freshman
Lily Lanier made six saves for Vassar to improve to 3-0 on the season. Mancini made one save in the loss.
