Women's Volleyball Splits Matches At Red Dragon Classic

CORTLAND, NY (September 2, 2011) – The Vassar women's volleyball team opened the season with a split of its first two matches at the 12-team Red Dragon Classic on Friday night. 

In the opening round match against Nazareth, the Brewers lost a tightly contested five set match 3-2 (21-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-22, 14-16), but rebounded in the nightcap against Bible Baptist College with a 3-0 sweep (25-18, 25-23, 25-22).

The Brewers will face Stockton College in Gold play pool on Saturday morning at 10:00 am.

Against Nazaraeth, four players earned double figures in kills, led by senior #Amy Bavosa
with 17 on 37 attack attempts. Junior Chloe McGuire# had 13 kills and in an impressive opening match, freshman Marie Pitre had 11 kills with only one error on 22 attempts, a .455 attack percentage. Sophmore Jessie Ditmore had 10 kills with only one error on 17 attempts (.529), starting off her season with a solid effort.

Junior Hilary Koenigs had 53 of 56 set assists. The Brewers had 46 digs on the defensive side, with sophomore Megan Anderson earning a career-high 14 digs. Ditmore had seven digs and sophomore Rose Carman added six. The Brewers played their best set in the fourth, hitting .520 as a team in defeating Nazareth 16-14.

The Brewers put together a sweeping effort against Baptist Bible. Ditmore parlayed the Nazareth match into an 11 kill effort with only two errors on 18 attempts. Bavosa chipped in with seven kills. Koenigs orchestrated 20 of Vassasr's 24 set assists. Libero Anderson had six digs.
