POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 16, 2011) -- The Vassar College men's soccer team dominated possession with a 26-3 edge in shots to defeat Maritime College 4-0 on Friday evening at Gordon Field.

The Brewers (5-1-1) host the NSCAA No. 1 nationally-ranked Christopher Newport University this Sunday, September 18, at 1:00 p.m. at Gordon Field. The Privateers (4-2-1) next play Medgar Evers at home on Sunday at 7:00 p.m.

Vassar evenly distributed its goals with two per half and wasted little time getting started with a goal in the 7th minute by senior captain Ross Macklin on a free kick to the far post from 24 yards out.

The Brewers tacked on another goal in the 15th minute as senior Sam Erlichson McCarthy corralled a loose ball after a series of passes in the box and blasted a shot off the diving keeper's extended hand and in for a 2-0 lead.

A pair of freshmen each added their second goals of the season in the second half as Tom Wiechert redirected a cross from junior Simon Whitelaw for a goal and Robert Torrence ripped a shot to the left corner to cap a build-up orchestrated by freshman Andre Cousineau.

Vassar junior captain Zander Mrlik stifled the Maritime offense with his relentless defense of balls in the air but the Privateers managed three shots after Mrlik's substitution. Maritime's Alex Smith had a quality shot from right in front of the goal in the 85th minute but Vassar keeper Ryan Grimme made his only save of the game in spectacular fashion as he dove and knocked the ball away with one hand.

Grimme improves to 4-0-1 with the win. For Maritime, John Dunne made seven saves in the loss.
