POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 10, 2011) -- Defending their home court, the Vassar women's volleyball team finished its annual Invitational with a strong 3-1 record, defeating Stevens 3-2 and losing to MIT in five hotly contested sets on Saturday at the Athletics & Fitness Center.
Junior hitter
Chloe McGuire, who was named to the All-Invitational Team, led the Brewers in both matches, earning 20 kills against both MIT and Stevens.
The Brewers, now 5-3 on the season, will next host Williams College on September 14 at Kenyon Hall at 7:00 pm.
MIT def. Vassar 3-2 (23-25, 23-25, 25-21, 25-18, 15-11)
In their first match of the day, Vassar jumped ahead of unbeaten MIT 2-0 before the Engineers rallied to win 3-2. The Engineers came into the match having lost only one set in their previous six matches, and fell behind the Brewers by identical 25-23 scores in the first two sets.
In both sets, the Brewers were bolstered by strong play from McGuire and freshman hitter
Marie Pitre.
Vassar held a 15-6 lead in the third set before MIT stormed back to take it 25-21 with help from senior middle hitter Cecily Joujon-Roche. The Engineers took the fourth as well to set up the deciding fifth set. With the fifth set tied at 3-3, the Engineers scored five straight points behind the serving of junior libero Katie Spielbauer. Vassar broke the run and narrowed the score to 12-10 after a McGuire kill. However, MIT won four of the next five points to close out the match, 15-11.
Both teams struggled with their attack percentage, but were strong defensively with Vassar earning 84 digs and MIT having 82. MIT's Spielbauer led all players with 31 digs.
McGuire excelled offensively and defensively, with 20 kills and 19 digs. Sophomore hitter
Jessie Ditmore had 10 kills, while junior setter
Hilary Koenigs contributed 41 set assists.
MIT's Joujon-Roche had 11 kills and a .455 attack percentage and junior outside hitter Trinity Leonard had 13 kills.
Vassar def. Stevens 3-2 (25-22, 25-27, 25-23, 19-25, 15-9)
The Brewers' second match of the day, against Stevens College (5-5), was another tightly contested five-setter. Vassar, led by McGuire and senior hitter
Amy Bavosa, controlled the fifth and deciding set, taking an 8-7 lead and winning 15-9.
Vassar lagged behind in the first set, down 9-4, until a timeout was called. Following the timeout, the Brewers went on a 10-2 run to take the lead 14-11. From there, the Brewers won the first set 25-22, with freshman Pitre contributing two kills.
The second set was the closest, with no team leading by more than three points. Vassar went on a three-point run to even the score at 22. Both teams matched each other, point for point, until the Ducks broke away for a 27-25 win. The third set was similarly close, with the score tied seven different times -- ultimately at 21-21 -- before Vassar went ahead for good with kills from Bavosa..
The Ducks fought back in the fourth set, winning 25-19.
McGuire led the Brewers with 20 kills. Bavosa and Ditmore each had nine. Koenigs had her second straight 40-plus assist match with 42 and McGuire finished with 22 digs.
For Stevens, Maggie Kowalska, a junior outside hitter, had a match high 23 digs and a team high 15 kills.
