POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 10, 2011) -- The Vassar College field hockey team's hopes of repeating as Betty Richey Tournament champions were dashed on Saturday as a stingy Manhattanville College team won the 23rd annual Betty Richey Tournament with a 4-1 victory over Vassar at Weinberg Field.

Although the Brewers scored first, the Valiants used an 18-9 first half shot advantage to take a 3-1 lead into halftime. The Manhattanville goalkeeper Amy Hilton made nine saves and allowed one goal en route to earning tournament MVP honors.

The Brewers (2-2) face Mercy College on the road on September 16 at 4:30 p.m. The Valiants face William Smith in the opening game of the William Smith Classic on September 17 at 2:00 p.m.

Vassar struck first in the 27th minute as Vassar sophomore Janet Kanzawa chipped a shot over the downed Manhattanville keeper and through a couple defenders for a 1-0 Vassar lead.

Manhattanville replied minutes later as Alyssa Coughlin slapped a long shot off a corner feed from Megan Greene.

Brittney Themistocles put Manhattanville ahead 2-1 with 5:20 remaining in the first half as she deflected a long ball from outside the arc by Alyssa Tourdot.

The Valiants extended the lead by two goals in the final minute of the half as Kayla Meenan slipped a goal into the back post on a cross from Alyssa Coughlin.

Defense characterized the second half until Manhattanville's Alyssa Tourdot added the only goal of the half for a 4-1 Manhattanville lead.

Vassar sophomore Maggie Brelis made eight saves in the loss.
