Freshmen Propel Women’s Soccer 2-0 Over New Paltz

NEW PALTZ, NY (September 1, 2011) -- The Vassar College women's soccer team kicked off the 2011 campaign with a 2-0 road win over cross-river rival SUNY New Paltz on Thursday evening.

The Brewers (1-0) next face Westfield State College in the Springfield Invitational this Saturday, September 3 at 5:00 p.m. New Paltz returns to action this weekend, hosting the inaugural Michelle Vargas-Robin Memorial Tournament. The Hawks square off with Maritime College at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday and face New Jersey City University at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Vassar's freshman class made an instant impact, contributing on both goals. Freshman Sarah Bourenane dished to the speedy sophomore Gavriella Kaplan for a finish in the box to put the Brewers up 1-0 in the 39th minute.

The physical freshman Kelsay Domb notched her first collegiate goal with a header on a lob from junior captain Keiko Kurita to extend Vassar's lead to 2-0 in the 60th minute.

On the game, Vassar outshot New Paltz by an 18-11 cushion and took five corner kicks to the Hawks' three.

Vassar junior goalkeeper Ali Higgins made three saves in the shutout victory.
