Match Results

CANTON, NY (May 1, 2011) -- The Vassar College men's tennis team suffered a hard-fought 5-4 loss to rival Skidmore in the Liberty League Championship on Sunday at St. Lawrence University's Sammis Tennis Courts.

The ITA No. 30 nationally ranked Thoroughbreds (10-7) captured their eighth Liberty League Championship overall and their third in four years. The Brewers improved on their 7-2 loss to Skidmore in the regular season and finish the schedule with a 10-10 record. Both teams have NCAA aspirations as independent bids.

Skidmore took the second and third doubles positions for a crucial 2-1 lead after doubles. Vassar's Josh Jasso and Ben Guzick knocked off the No. 5 nationally ranked duo of Spencer Cheng and Jimmy Sherpa 8-3 at No. 1 doubles for Vassar's lone doubles point. Vassar's Andrew Guzick and Max Willner came up just shy in a 9-8 (7-5) tiebreaker loss to Luke Granger and Yahia Imam at No. 2 doubles.

Skidmore's edge in doubles proved critical as the teams split singles. Vassar's Max Willner rolled on Spencer Cheng 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. The Thoroughbreds clinched the Championship at 5-2 before Andrew Guzick and Josh Kessler prevailed in third sets. The No. 7 ranked Guzick downed Granger 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and Kessler topped Danny Knight 7-5, 5-7, 7-5 at No. 6 singles.
