Men's Hoops Push First Place Hobart In 86-69 Loss

GENEVA, NY (February 19, 2011) -- The Vassar College men's basketball team challenged the first place Hobart College Statesmen in an 86-69 loss in the final game of the season Saturday afternoon at Bristol Gym.

Vassar shot a respectable 46.9 percent (15-of-32) from the field in the second half and was narrowly outscored of 42-40.

The Brewers finish the season with a 3-22 (1-13 Liberty) record. The Statesmen (19-6, 11-3) clinched first place and will host the Liberty League Playoffs on February 25-26.

Trailing 66-46 with 10:27 remaining, the Brewers ignited for an 18-3 run to come within five points of the lead at 69-64 with 5:41 remaining. Freshman Sam Rappaport hit a triple during the run and made the layup to push the Brewers within five. Hobart countered with a 14-0 run for an 83-64 lead to ice the game with 1:36 left to play.

In the first half, Vassar tied the game for the third and final time at 19-19 on a triple by sophomore guard Jon Herzog with 8:51 remaining. The Statesmen pulled away with a three-minute 13-1 run behind an 11-point surge by Tim Llewellyn for a 32-20 lead. Hobart finished the half with a 44-29 lead.

Hobart's Mark Bruce led all scorers and rebounders with 19 points and eight boards. Stefan Thompson dished a game high seven assists.

Sophomore guard Jon Herzog led Vassar with 15 points and added five rebounds. Junior guard Caleb McGraw and freshman forward Evan Carberry chipped in 13 points apiece with Carberry adding six boards.
