Field Hockey Falls Behind At Halftime, Loses to Rochester 3-1 In League Play

ROCHESTER, NY (October 8, 2011) – The University of Rochester field hockey team kept Vassar from registering a shot in the first half and built up a 3-0 intermission lead that the Yellowjackets maintained in defeating the Brewers, 3-1 in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon.

Vassar, which had four second half shots, got a goal from senior forward Emily Maier with 19 seconds to play to avoid the shutout.

The loss drops Vassar to 5-6, 1-3 in Liberty League play. Rochester improves to 9-5, 1-3. The Brewers will next dip out of Liberty League action, facing Elms College on October 13 at 7:00 p.m. in Chicopee, Mass. Rochester next travels to Ithaca for a 5:00 p.m. game on October 12.

Vassar sophomore goalie Magie Brelis made 10 saves in the contest, all coming in the second half.

Rochester got on the board in the 7th minute when junior forward Anna Dobrzynski tipped in a goal following a penalty corner. The Yellowjackets would tack on two more goals in the 20th and 27th minute of action.  Senior defender Alexis Vangellow tipped in a goal off an initial shot from 14 feet out to a provide a 2-0 Rochester lead. Sophomore midfielder Katie Flaschner scored an unassisted goal when he tucked home a goal following a scramble in front of the Vassar net.

Rochester did have 13 shots in the second half, however none of them got past Brelis.

Maier, who had two of Vassar's four shots in the game, scored her goal when she tapped home a loose ball in front of the Rochester cage. Yellowjackets sophomore goalie Madison Wagner made one save in the contest.
