Box Score

GENEVA, NY (October 7, 2011) – Sophomore goalie Maggie Brelis kept No. 17 nationally ranked William Smith off the scoreboard for the first 40:34 of the contest, but the Herons were able to score the game's lone goal at that juncture, en route to a 1-0 Liberty League victory Friday afternoon at McCooey Field.

Brelis, who was coming off a 12-save performance in a 2-0 win over Morrisville State in her last outing, made 11 first half stops and 14 for the game, in limiting a potent Herons field hockey team to just a single tally. While William Smith did register 31 shots in the game, 15 of which were on goal, Brelis was able to keep the Brewers in the contest with her net play.

The loss drops Vassar to 5-5, 1-2, while William Smith improves to 10-2, 3-1. The Brewers travel to Rochester for a 2:00 p.m. Liberty League contest on Saturday, while the Herons host Rensselaer at 2:00 p.m.

Following the William Smith goal, Vassar did earn two of its four penalty corners, but were unable to score.

The remainder of the game continued to be a scoreless contest, with the Herons keeping possession of the ball for the last five minutes of the game.
