POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 29, 2011) -- As the wind and snowfall increased, the chances for a goal seemed less likely, but senior
Sam Erlichson McCarthy scored the golden goal in the first minute of overtime to celebrate Senior Day and lift the Vassar College men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Bard College on Saturday.
In the third minute of overtime, sophomore
Jake Rabin sent a cross into the box and Erlichson McCarthy skimmed a header over the Bard keeper and into the goal.
The Brewers (10-5-2, 4-3-1 Liberty) secured the fourth seed in the Liberty League Championships with Wednesday's 3-0 win over Union and will play the top-ranked and top-seeded St. Lawrence University on Wednesday, November 2, at a time to be announced. The Raptors end the season with a 5-12-1 record, 0-7-1 in the Liberty League.
In the first minute of overtime, Vassar nearly found the golden goal when
Tom Wiechert floated a shot from 25 yards out that hit the post. Macklin was waiting eight yards out for the rebound but his finish went high.
In the first half, Vassar kept the ball in Bard's end but the scrappy Raptor defense swarmed the ball and minimized Vassar's scoring chances.
