UNION, NJ (October 28, 2011) – The Kean University field hockey team built a comfortable 4-0 halftime lead and maintained that margin for nearly the entire game, defeating Vassar 4-1 in the season finale on Friday evening.
The Brewers avoided the shutout when freshman
Enya Cunningham tallied her third goal of the season in the game's 66th minute. It came off a scrum in front of the Kean goal and was knocked home into the left side of the goal.
The Brewers conclude the 2011 season with a 7-9 record, the most wins since the 2002 season. Kean improves to 10-5 and plays at SUNY New Paltz on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
Kean scored two goals in the game's first 5:29, and only 2:14 seconds apart. Senior midfielder Olivia Triano scored from the top of the circle following a penalty corner 3:14 into the contest. Senior forward Briana Mace put the Cougars up 2-0 at the 5:29 mark when she tucked home a goal off a rebound shot from teammate Triano that was initially saved by Vassar sophomore goalie
Maggie Brelis.
Triano scored her second goal of the game in the 24th minute off a hard shot from the right side. Just three minutes before halftime, junior midfielder Kelly Bachovchin pushed Kean ahead 4-0, placing the Brewers in a tough deficit.
Vassar managed only one shot in the second half, coming from junior midfielder
Rebecca Smith, The Brewers had seven shots in the second half, three coming in the final six minutes. Cunningham's goal was the result of a penalty corner at the 65:44 mark of the
game.
For Vassar, Brelis made 17 saves, a season high. Kean sophomore goalie Erin Langan made two saves. The Cougars held a 19-3 advantage in penalty corners.
