Women's Soccer Prevails 1-0 Over Bard In Downpour

Box Score

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY (October 20, 2011) – The way things were going, the women's soccer game between Vassar College and Bard College on Thursday night was going to end either because of a slippery ball eluding the grasp of the goalkeeper, or because of a single moment of brilliance.

It was the latter, thanks to Vassar freshman Sarah Bourenane.

Bourenane's goal in the 66th minute, made through sheets of rain and against a strong wind, gave Vassar a 1-0 victory over Bard in a Liberty League match. The game-winner came off a turnover about 25 yards out, when the freshman struck a line drive of a shot that hit the bottom of the crossbar and landed about two feet over the goal line behind Bard keeper Lena James.

The game was played relatively evenly throughout, though Vassar carried much of the play early on. In the end, the Brewers (7-7-1, 2-4-1 Liberty League) outshot Bard, 12-7, and really kept the Raptors from producing quality scoring chances.

Freshman Lily Lanier (Brookline, MA) made four saves for Vassar. The Brewers' next game is on Saturday at Montclair State University at 2 p.m.

James made nine saves for Bard (3-11, 0-6 Liberty). The Raptors play at RPI on Saturday at 6 p.m.
