Women's Rugby Downed 28-27 By Stony Brook

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 2, 2011) -- The Vassar College women's rugby team, stricken by numerous injuries to starters, did not prevail despite out-scoring Stony Brook Women five tries to four. As was the case last year in the playoffs the lack of conversions proved deadly. Stony Brook converted all their tries for 28 points while Vassar managed just one conversion.

Vassar College Women 27 v 28 Stony Brook University Women
Tries: Chelsea Boccagno (1), Nichelle Jackson (1), Natalie Ward (1), Shanaye Williams (1), Hannah Fink (1).
Cons: Julia Maltby (1).

Overall Record: 2-2.

Next week: Saturday October 8, 2011 at Quinnipiac University Women at Quinnipiac, kick-off 12:00 pm

Stony Brook jumped ahead 14-0 as Vassar fell off tackles on the outside. The visitors ran with authority and real enthusiasm and it paid dividends. They also opted to kick deep and it proved a good option as the Vassar back 3 struggled to deal with the kicks.

At the half it was 21-15 as Vassar had responded by scoring 3 tries while SBU notched up their third.

The forwards seemed to have the upperhand in the scrums and in the rucks but the Vassar backs too often coughed up the ball in the loose. In the second period Vassar manged 2 tries to SBU's one.

Vassar falls to 1-2 in the division but did earn 2 bonus points for scoring 4 or more tries and losing by 7 or less.
