Women's Soccer Falls 1-0 To No. 2 William Smith

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 15, 2011) -- The Vassar College women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 defeat to the NSCAA No. 2 nationally ranked William Smith College in Liberty League play on Saturday afternoon at Gordon Field.

William Smith dictated the game's tempo and held a 29-3 advantage in shots. Vassar's Lily Lanier was active in goal and made eight saves in the losing effort. Amanda Davis notched her 12th shutout of the season for William Smith, the nation's leading team in shutout percentage.

The Brewers (6-7-1, 1-4-1 Liberty) are in seventh place in the Liberty League with four points and play Bard College on the road on Wednesday, October 19, at 7:00 p.m. The Herons (12-0-1, 6-0 Liberty) remain undefeated and in first place in the Liberty League with 18 points. They host Union College on Saturday, October 22, at 2:00 p.m. at Cozzens Field.

In the 36th minute, William Smith took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Madeline Buckley. Whitney Frary fired a pass on the ground into the box. Buckley collected the ball with her back to the goal eight yards out, turned, and drilled a low shot for her first goal of the season.

Vassar's best scoring opportunity came in the 29th minute when freshman Kelsey Domb broke free and headed a cross off the back post. The rebound went right back to her but her volley attempt went wide.
