ROCHESTER, NY (October 14, 2011) – The Vassar College women's volleyball team fell behind 2-0 to Rochester Institute of Technology, and despite winning the third set, were unable to force a deciding fifth set, and fell to the Tigers 3-1 (18-25, 27-29, 25-17, 20-25) Friday afternoon in Liberty League play.
The match hinged on the second set, won by RIT 29-27. After trailing in the early stages, the Brewers took at 20-18 led, but saw the set tied five more times before RIT got back-to-back kills to take an important 2-0 lead in the match..
Vassar now stands at 15-10, 5-5 in the Liberty League. The Brewers continue league play on Saturday at RIT, facing Skidmore at 11:00 a.m. and Union at 1:30. RIT improved to 12-15, 2-3, with another league match tonight against Union.
The second set saw the Brewers rebound from a 15-11 deficit to take a 20-18 lead following a kill from freshman
Marie Pitre. RIT was able to jump ahead 23-22 on a Vassar service error and take a 26-25 lead off a kill from sophomore
Jessie Ditmore and a 27-26 lead off an RIT attack error. The Tigers won the next three points, the final two points coming off kills from junior outside hitter Katie Cooper and junior middle hitter Cat Sullivan.
Vassar rebounded nicely in the third set with a 25-17 win. A kill from junior
Chloe McGuire pushed the Brewers ahead 20-13 and the Tigers were held at bay as senior
Amy Bavosa finished off the set with back-to-back kills.
The deciding fourth set was tied only once, 5-5. RIT shot ahead 14-10, but a kill from freshman
Taylor Mosley kept the Brewers close at 17-15. The Brewers capitalized on an RIT attack error to close within 18-17, but the Brewers couldn't gain any further ground. RIT inched ahead on a kill from Sullivan and a service ace for a 24-19 lead and got a kill from junior outside hitter Rebecca Moore to close out the set.
Behind Sullivan's play, RIT jumped out to an 18-10 lead in the first set and didn't allow the Brewers to get closer than four points, holding a 22-18 lead. A kill by Moore and a subsequent service ace earned the Tigers a 1-0 match lead.
For Vassar, McGuire had 16 kills, Bavosa 10 and Mosley eight. Junior setter
Hilary Koenigs had 41 set assists. McGuire led the defensive effort with 15 digs, followed by Bavosa with 11 and both Koenigs and Pitre with 10.
RIT got a 15 kill match from Moore and 12 kills from sophomore outside hitter Kyra Wilson-Houck. Junior setter Christina Worth had 43 set assists and freshman defensive specialist Bethany Davis earned a match-high 18 digs.
