ROCHESTER, NY (October 14, 2011) -- The Vassar College men's soccer team fell 2-0 to Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) on Friday but remains in fourth place in the Liberty League with seven points, a one-point lead over Clarkson University.
The Brewers (7-4-2, 2-2-1 Liberty) continue the road trip with a 2:00 p.m. league contest against Hobart College on Saturday, October 15. The Tigers (8-3-2, 4-0-1 Liberty) solidify their hold on second place in the Liberty League standings with 13 points and host Bard College tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m.
RIT outshot the Brewers 14-5 and had six corner kicks to five for Vassar. Darryl Anderson scored both RIT goals, while James Whelan and Danny Bloshkin had assists for the Tigers.
Vassar had the first good scoring chance which came in in the 33rd minute.
Zander Mrlik sent a long throw into the RIT penalty box. The ball got loose in the box and came right to
Harrison Freund who fired a shot from point-blank range that Conway somehow tipped over the net to keep the game scoreless.
The Tigers took the lead in the 42nd minute on Anderson's first goal of the game as he fired a low shot that found the corner of the net for his second tally of the season.
RIT made it 2-0 early in the second on Anderson's second goal of the game as Bloshkin sent a ball into the Vassar penalty area off a free kick that Anderson ran onto and re-directed into the Vassar net for his third goal of the season.
Ross Macklin had a great chance to cut the deficit down to a goal with a little under 34 minutes to play. Macklin headed a shot from inside the six-yard box that Conway managed to jab over the net.
That would be the last good chance for the Brewers, as the RIT defense stiffened, breaking a consecutive scoreless streak that had stood since the 1989 season. The Tigers set the program record for consecutive scoreless minutes, running the streak to 674. RIT has not conceded a goal since Sept. 17 versus SUNY Oswego and are 6-0-1 in their last seven games.
Sean Conway picked up his eighth shut out win of the season making four saves.
Ryan Grimme took the loss for the Brewers allowing two goals and making four saves.
