Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 2, 2010) -- After 87 minutes of scoreless play, it looked as though the Vassar men's soccer team would be heading to overtime, when Manhattanville's Keston George sailed a heartbreaking shot into the back of the net that proved to be the game winner, as the Brewers fell 1-0 in their home opener at Gordon Field.

The Brewers (1-1) will host SUNY Old Westbury on Wednesday, September 8 at 4:30 at Gordon Field. With the win, the Valiants even their record at 1-1 and will open up their home schedule in the first round of the Valiant Classic against SUNY Plattsburgh7 p.m. next Friday.

With just two and a half minutes left to play in the game, Manhattanville senior Mitchel Ghiggia lofted a swift pass from the left side of midfield right to the feet of George. George collected the ball just outside of the center box and took one dribble to the right that gave him just enough space to launch a shot to the top left corner of the net for the game winner.

The Brewers struggled offensively, as they only managed one shot on goal in the contest. They did threaten late in the second half when Manhattanville goalie Jason Torres thought he had an easy pickup inside the box. Senior Ben Scaglione rushed the unsuspecting goalie and managed to force him into a weak kick just outside of the box that found the foot of freshman Juliano Pereira, but Pereira's shot was high above the net.

The Valiants nearly struck midway through the second half when junior Adam Kent sent a ball up from midfield that found an unmarked Moshee Kelyana streaking down the middle. Keylana collected his dribble and rolled a shot past the approaching keeper Ryan Grimme, narrowly missing the right goal post.

Manhattanville controlled possession for much of the first half, but it looked as though the Brewers might strike in the 13th minute when junior midfielder Ross Macklin sent a ball through the right side of the field up to sophomore Zander Mrlik, but Mrlik couldn't quite get enough on the ball to muster up a shot before his defender caught up with him. On the ensuing possession for Manhattanville, speedy forward Kenneil Haye made a nifty move past a Vassar defender on the right hand side and lofted a pass to senior midfielder Sebastian Chica who placed a shot on the ground to the left hand corner of the net that was saved by a diving Grimme.

The Brewers threatened again late in the first half, when junior Harrison Freund took a corner kick with just 25 seconds. Freund sent the ball to the far right side of the box where two Vassar forwards put consecutive headers on goal, but Manhattanville defenders repelled each attempt.

The Brewers managed eight shots in the game, just one of which was on goal, while the Valiants launched twenty shots, eight on goal. Despite offensive woes, the Brewers received a tremendous defensive effort, particularly from senior captain Jimmy Worboys, who had the tough task of staying in front of the speedy Haye for much of the game. Grimme also supplied a solid effort in goal for the Brewers in his first collegiate start, making eight saves total.

Grimme falls to 0-1 with the loss, while Manhattanville's Torres made just one save and improves to 1-1 on the season.
