Volleyball Splits Opening Round Matches At Red Dragon Classic

CORTLAND, NY (September 3, 2010) – The Vassar College women's volleyball team split its opening round matches at the Red Dragon Volleyball Classic hosted by SUNY Cortland on Friday. The Brewers opened play with a 3-1 (18-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-20) win over SUNY Potsdam, but lost their second match to Rochester 3-1 (25-23, 17-25, 19-25, 22-25). 

Vassar, 2-1, will play two matches on Saturday, the first against local rival SUNY New Paltz and the second against an opponent to be determined based on the results on Pool Play completion, but will be either St. Lawrence or Nazareth. 

In earning their second win of the season against SUNY Potsdam in the opener, the Brewers got nine kills each from junior Amy Bavosa and sophomore Chloe McGuire. Senior Julianna Simon chippped in with six kills and sophomore Hilary Koenigs had five kills and a .429 attack percentage. Koenigs had 28 set assists in the match. McGuire had 12 digs, and Bavosa and senior Chelsea Mottern each added eight. 

In a close match against Rochester, one decided in four sets,, the Brewers did not have an efficient hitting match, making 23 errors on 134 attempts with 32 team kills. Bavosa led the way with 11 kills and was the benefactor of 28 set assists from Koenigs. Mottern had 19 digs.
