Volleyball Splits Opening Matches In Pool D Play at MIT Invitational

MEDFORD, MA (September 24, 2010) – The Vassar College women's volleyball team split its two matches at the MIT Invitational Friday night. Playing in Pool D, the Brewers swept past Smith College 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-23) to start play and in the nightcap fell to No. 29 nationally ranked Tufts 13-25, 16-25, 12-25).

Vassar now stands at 7-6 and will play two matches on Saturday in the Silver bracket against host MIT at Noon and either Endicott or DeSales at 4:00 p.m. The brackets can be found here.

Against Tufts, the first set was tied at 1, 3 and 5. The Brewers held a brief lead at 3-3 before Tufts took the lead and never relinquished it. Tufts built 11-6 and 20-10 margins, and scored five of the final eight points for the 25-13 first set win.

The Brewers kept it close again in the beginning of the second set, taking a 4-3 and 12-10 lead. The Jumbos tied the match at 12-12, then jumped ahead 14-13 and never looked back from that score for a 25-16 lead.

Tufts sprinted ahead early in the third set, 7-3, and the Brewers were unable to take a lead or tie the set, cruising to a 25-12 win.

Against Tufts, sophomore Chloe McGuire had seven kills and junior Amy Bavosa chipped in with six. Sophomore Hilary Koenigs was responsibile for all 19 set assists. Freshman Jessie Ditmore led the Brewers with eight digs and senior Chelsea Mottern followed with seven.

Vassar began play with a 3-0 sweep over Smith. Bavosa and senior Julianna Simon had strong matches with nine and eight kills respectively and the pair made only three combined hitting errors on 29 total attack attempts. The eight kills was a season high for Simon. Koenigs set game accounted for 25 of Vasar's 30 total sets. Along with four sets, Mottern led the defense with eight digs.

The Brewers hit .333 in both the first and second sets for take control of the match.
