CHICOPEE, MA (September 18, 2010) – The Vassar College women's soccer team played rigid defense and spread the wealth on offense in a 3-0 shutout victory over Elms College Saturday afternoon. Freshman
Sheeva Seyfi connected for what would be the eventual game-winner early in the first half, the rookie's second goal in as many games. Vassar's remaining offensive output came from unexpected contributions by senior defenders
Elysa Greenberger and
Lauren Bell, who each registered their first goal of the season.
The Brewers (5-2) are off to their best start in years and will look to continue their solid play this weekend when they open Liberty League play on the road at St. Lawrence Saturday, September 24 at 4:00 p.m. and at Clarkson Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Elms falls to 1-4 on the season and returns to non-conference action on Wednesday, September 22 for a 4:30 p.m. tilt against Smith College.
Vassar pressured Elms early in the first period before Seyfi controlled a through ball from senior captain
Carolyn Demougeot and punched it into the left side of the net to give the Brewers a 1-0 lead 17:05 into the game.
Vassar took 15 shots in the opening stanza but Elms' freshman goalkeeper Hayley Zisk kept the game close, notching six of her 10 saves in the opening 45 minutes.
Thirteen minutes into the second stanza, senior defender
Elysa Greenberger put Vassar up two when she placed the ball in the top right corner of the net from approximately 20-yards out on a direct kick.
The Brewers added their final tally when senior defender
Lauren Bell intercepted an Elms pass and blasted a shot into the top right corner of the net to set the score at 3-0.
The stingy Brewer defense limited the Blazers to just four shots with two on goal.
Elms College's Zisk made 10 saves in her debut for the Blazers and registers the loss. Vassar's
Lexi Hutton, 3-1 on the season, tallied two saves in the Brewers' first shutout of the year.
