Women's Volleyball Sweeps Past Elms, Oswego State at Union Invitational

SCHENECTADY, NY (September 17, 2010) -- The Vassar women's volleyball team got back on track with a pair of 3-0 victories to begin play at the Union Invitational on Friday night. The Brewers defeated Elms College 25-7, 25-9, 25-11 to open play and then disposed of Oswego State 25-18, 25-13, 25-16.

The pair of wins improves the Brewers to 5-4 on the season. Saturday play at Union has Vassar facing Cortland at Noon and Hartwick at 2:00 p.m.

Junior Amy Bavosa led the Brewers in both matches, getting eight kills against Elms and a season-high 18 against Oswego State.

In the victory against Elms, freshman Jessie Ditmore led Vassar with a seaon-high nine kills. Senior Julianna Simon chipped in with six kills. Sophomore Hilary Koenigs had 21 assists in the game and the Brewers got additional offense from senior Chelsea Mottern who had six service aces in addition to her steady play on defense with eight digs.

In the nightcap against Oswego State, Bavosa had 18 kills, benefitting from a 36 assist performance from Koenigs. Bavosa's 18 kills was one shy of her career-best 19 kills, set against Bard College last October 19. Sophomore Cebe Loomis set a new career high with seven kills and four blocks. Mottern had 10 digs in the match.
