POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 27, 2010) - The Vassar College men's tennis team put on a dominating performance against its rival and reigning Liberty League Champion Skidmore College with a 9-0 victory Saturday afternoon in Walker Fieldhouse.
The Brewers - ranked No. 11 in the ITA Northeast Region - improve to 5-0 on the year and will host the Atlantic South's No. 12 ranked Christopher Newport this Friday March 5 at 11:00 a.m. The Thoroughbreds - ranked No. 23 nationally and No. 7 in the Northeast - take a 4-1 record on the road to face The College of New Jersey this Sunday February 28 at 12:00 p.m.
The Brewers jumped out to an early lead with a quick sweep of doubles. At the No. 3 doubles spot, Vassar's
Greg Katz and
Josh Jasso were on serve at 3-4 against Skidmore's Alex Fromson and Jeremy Hogan when Katz held to ignite a four game tear that included two breaks putting the “Southpaw Duo” ahead 7-4.
Katz and Jasso ended the match with a break on three spectacular points -- a Jasso backhand return winner up the middle, a dipping down the line forehand return winner from Katz, and an angled backhand volley from Jasso -- to seal the victory 8-5 and complete the doubles sweep.
“Skidmore always has solid, aggressive doubles teams,” said head coach Ki Kroll. "I was pleased that we came out focused and took control early.”
At the No. 4 singles position,
Max Willner clinched the match with a swift 6-0, 6-2 victory over Skidmore's Alex Fromson.
“Max's game is really coming together,” said Kroll. “I liked to see him be aggressive and go forward.”
Although this was only a regular season match, Vassar made a statement with its decisive victory.
“Overall, we were motivated and handled this test,” said Kroll. "We all know Skidmore is awaiting in the Liberty League Championship.”
The Brewers will host the 2010 Liberty League Championships on April 17 at the Joss Tennis Center.
