NEW LONDON, CT (February 20, 2010) - The Vassar College men's tennis team picked up their second straight dual match victory with an 8-1 win over the United States Coast Guard Academy on Saturday at the the Coast Guard Academy indoor courts.

The Brewers improve to 4-0 on the season heading into a challenging weekend in which they host rival Skidmore this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and Christopher Newport University this Sunday at 4:00 p.m. The Bears take a 3-4 record on the road to Stonehill this Saturday at 5:00 p.m.

In doubles, senior captain Michael Mattelson and sophomore Ben Guzick rose to the occasion to pull out a tight 8-6 win against the formidable no. 1 team of Greg Mitchell and Chris Pappe earning Vassar a 3-0 lead entering singles.

“Sweeping doubles is always huge,” said head coach Ki Kroll, “and Mike and Ben showed their worth facing quite a test in a particularly strong Coast Guard team.”

Junior Greg Katz worked at his usual fast pace to defeat Blake Maurer 6-2, 6-1 and officially clinch the match for the Brewers.

Although the Brewers took five of the six singles matches en route to the 8-1 win, freshman Andrew Guzick overcame a first set loss in his impressive comeback victory. Coast Guard's Nick Martin took the first set 6-4 and the battle continued into the second as each player converted two breaks to take the set to a tiebreaker. Guzick flipped his switch and took the second set in dominating fashion -- 7-1 in the tiebreaker -- and then capped off the match with a 10-6 win in the deciding super tiebreaker.

“Andrew really stepped up and seized the momentum when it counted,” said Kroll, “that's a great win for him.”
