Men's Basketball Upended 72-39 By New Paltz

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (December 7, 2010) -- In a game with only one tie at 14-14, the Vassar College men's basketball team succumbed to cross-river rival SUNY New Paltz 72-39 Tuesday evening at the Athletics and Fitness Center.

New Paltz capitalized on 14 Vassar turnovers for 14 points, and made 10 free throws to build a 33-20 lead at intermission. The Hawk lead swelled to 33 points at 65-32 with 5:20 remaining behind a 15-3 run fueled by a couple backdoor layups and free throws.

The Brewers (1-6) return to action on January 1 against Colby College in the ECAC Holiday Festival in Orlando, FL. The Hawks (4-3) face Montclair State University on the road on January 5 at 7:00 p.m.

Down 12-2 to open the game, the Brewers countered with a 12-2 run to even the score at 14-14. A floater in the lane by freshman Abe Gatling and a strong finish in the post by senior captain Chris Whitney capped off the run. With another 12-2 run, the Hawks took a 26-16 lead with 3:19 left in the half and nursed it for the remainder of the game.

The Hawks controlled the paint with a 42-22 point advantage inside including 18 second chance points. Vassar's 26 turnovers led to 28 points for the Hawks.

Sophomore John Donnelly scored over half of Vassar's points and was the only Brewer to reach double figures as he posted a game-high 21 points on an efficient 6-9 from the floor and 9-12 from the line.

Four Hawks reached double digits in scoring as Matt Devine led with 14 points, Lamard Herron added 13 points, Lorenzo Brown recorded 11 points and Harris Wichard had 10 points. Shareef Taylor pulled down a game high eight rebounds.
