Women's Volleyball Splits Opening Matches At Liberty League Championships

CANTON, NY (November 5, 2010) – After dropping its opening match of the Liberty League Championships to host St. Lawrence 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 13-25, 18-25), the Vassar College women's volleyball team rebounded with a huge 3-2 victory (21-25, 25-17, 25-21, 13-25, 15-11) over Skidmore College, creating an interesting second day of play on Saturday.

St. Lawrence enters Saturday's play 2-0, while Vassar and Clarkson are 1-1 and Union 0-2.
Now 17-14 on the season, the Brewers face Clarkson at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday and conclude the championships at 1:00 p.m. against Union.

In the opener against St. Lawrence, a team that upset defending champion and top seed Clarkson 3-1, the Brewers fell 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 13-25, 18-25). Vassar got 10 kills and six digs from junior Amy Bavosa, seven kills and nine digs from sophomore Chloe McGure and 15 digs from senior Chelsea Mottern.

In the thrilling victory over Skidmore, McGuire was one of four Brewers in double figures in kills. She had 21 kills with only three errors on 45 attempts. Bavosa added 13 kills, as did freshman Jessie Ditmore. Senior Julianna Simon chipped in with 10. Sophomore setter Hilary Koenigs had a career-high 57 assists. Mottern had 13 digs and Bavosa had eight for a Vassar team that earned 43 total in the match.
