Box Score

TROY, NY (October 30, 2010) -- The Vassar College men's soccer team hung tough with regionally ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in a defensive battle for 72 minutes before conceding two goals to lose their final game of the season 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Renwyck Field.

The Brewers (8-6-1, 1-4-1 Liberty) finish the 2010 season in seventh place in the Liberty League. The NSCAA East Region No. 10 Engineers (9-4-4, 4-1-2 Liberty) finish the regular season in second place in the Liberty League and face Union the Wednesay, November 3 in the semifinals of the four-team Liberty League Championships.

Neither team produced a shot on goal in a tightly contested opening 45 minutes.

A red card to Vassar freshman goalkeeper Ryan Grimme in the 64th minute gave RPI the man advantage and they finally broke through the stingy Vassar defense with with a header by Adam Updegrove on a cross from Ryan Kelley to take a 1-0 lead in the 73rd minute. Junior captain Brad Shelofsky played a ball into the box from 45-yards out. Sophomore Ryan Kelley headed it back across the top of the six where Updegrove finished with a head into the open net.

RPI iced the game with a goal from Liezer Esquenazi assisted by Updegrove in the 83rd minute. Updegrove earned the assist by sliding a pass across the goal mouth after making a run up the right flank. Esquenazi buried the point-blank chance for a 2-0 advantage.

RPI senior goalie Penny finished with one save to earn his ninth shutout. Freshman Alex Egan relieved Grimmein goal in the 64th minute. Egan allowed RPI's two goals and evens out his record at 1-1.
