Women's Rugby Advances To Met. NY Championship With 29-12 Win Over Rutgers

Senior captain Keri Peacock scored two tries for the Brewers.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 24, 2010) – In a postseason rematch of a 22-22 tie earlier in this season, the Vassar College women's rugby team defeated Rutgers University 29-12 in the Met. NY semifinals Sunday afternoon at the farm.

The Brewers (4-2-1) need to get a big crowd out for Sunday's game that will see them play for the Met. NY Division II title. New Paltz will play at Vassar at 1:00 pm and it should be a great game.

It was a battle royale as these two teams had tied earlier in the season. They both went at it hammer and tongs but in the end Vassar came out with the win as they outrucked their opponents and secured good fast ball. It was good to have Keri Peacock back at the helm for the Brewers as she'd been unavailable in their loss to Marist last weekend. She not only scored 2 tries but was a menace to the Rutgers team all afternoon.

Vassar had struggled in the scrum when the teams met in Piscataway and it had finished 22-22 but with everything on the line they were rock solid. It's interesting the lessons that this team has learnt in the past few weeks alone. Against Marist they hopefully learned that they must play with passion and heart right from the start. While against Rutgers they must have realized how imperative it is that they get their set-piece right to provide a platform for attack.

The quick ruck ball and close support was critical to the team success in making yards early. Rutgers was forced on to the back foot and it was a matter fo taking their chances. Peacock needed no second invitation. At the half it was 15-0 and O'Mara Taylor had added her name to the scoresheet alongside Peacock. Although Rutger's scored to get some momentum at 15-7 it was Vassar that responded immediately and Taylor went slicing through the middle and it was 22-7.

Freshmen Margaret Kwateng scored next for Vassar and it was 29-7 before Rutgers scored a consolation try and the game finished at 29-12.
