POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 24, 2010) – In attempts to play spoiler in the Liberty League field hockey playoff picture, Vassar College held William Smith in check with a 2-1 halftime deficit, but the Herons scored four unanswered goals in the second half en route to a 6-1 victory over the Brewers Sunday afternoon at Weinberg Field.
The loss drops Vassar to 2-14, 0-7. William Smith, which needed a victory to remain one of the top four teams in the Liberty League playoffs, improves to 11-6, 4-3. The Brewers will end the 2010 season on Tuesday, October 26 with a 7:00 p.m. game at Scranton. William Smith will host Geneseo State on October 30 at 7:00 p.m.
The Herons controlled the contest, getting three goals from first year midfielder Melanie O'Connor, two of which came in the second half. For the game, William Smith held a decisive 32-6 advantage in shots, taking 20 of those in the first half.
In the closing minute of the first half, a goal by Vassar junior midfielder Emily Maier closed the William Smith lead to 2-1, but the Herons were difficult to contain in the second half, scoring three goals in a nine minute span from 38:55 to 49:10 to put the game out of Vassar's reach.
O'Connor, who scored the game's first goal just 3:26 into the contest, had two of those goals in the William Smith run. Senior forward Emily Atwan had the Herons' fifth goal. Senior forward Tempe Newson and first year forward Taylor Cappello also had goals for William Smith.
After William Smith scored its fourth goal, which prompted Vassar to replace freshman goalie Maggie Brelis with senior Rachel Horwitz, the Herons were able to tally two more goals.. Brelis made nine saves. Horwitz had one.
William Smith sophomore goalie Taryn Little made one save in the contest.
