Bavosa Named MVP of Colonial Classic, Brewers Down Colby-Sawyer

Bavosa had strong matches on both offense and defense.

DANBURY, CT (October 23, 2010) – Ledy by junior Amy Bavosa, who was named the Colonial Classic MVP, and All-Classic selection sophmore Hilary Koenigs, the Vassar College women's volleyball team will head into next weekend's annual VC Invitational on a high note. Following a tough 3-2 loss (25-14, 28-26, 22-25, 23-25, 10-15) to Rivier in the second of three matches at the Classic held at Western Connecticut, the Brewers rebounded with a 3-1 (25-18, 25-22, 22-25, 26-24) victory over Colby-Sawyer.

Now 14-11 on the season, Vassar will return to action next Friday and Saturday at the AFC. The Brewers will face Kings College at 4:00 p.m. and Daemen College at 6:00 p.m. in Friday's matches.

Against Colby-Sawyer, the Brewers got a 16 kill performance from Bavosa and 12 from sophomore Chloe McGuire. Senior Julianna Simon had a strong match with nine kills on 26 attack attempts and only two errors. Koenigs had her second straight match with 50 or more set assists, accumulating 52 in the match. The Brewers had 54 digs in the match, 14 of those coming from senior Chelsea Mottern.

The Rivier match was tightly contested, and from an offensive standpoint, the Brewers had one of their most balanced efforts, with four players all reaching double figures in kills. McGuire and Bavosa had 15 and 12 kills respectivel. Simon, along with freshman Jesse Ditmore, had 10 each. Koenigs was one set assist shy of 50 for the match, earning 49. Mottern once against led the defensive game with 14 digs. Bavosa had nine digs and freshman Rose Carman had seven digs to go along with seven kills.
