Men's Soccer's Playoff Hopes Still Alive After 1-1 2OT Tie to Skidmore

Box Score

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – The Vassar College men's soccer team needed a win to control its playoff destiny and although they tied fifth place Skidmore 1-1 at Wachenheim Field on Saturday, they have not been mathematically eliminated from the Liberty League playoffs.

The sixth place Brewers (8-5-1, 1-3-1 Liberty) have four points and need to win their remaining two games against third place Union (3-1-1 Liberty, 10 points) Sunday at 1:00 p.m. and fourth place RPI (2-1-2, 8 points) on Saturday, October 30 at 2:00 p.m. The Brewers also need one of these teams to lose their other game to Skidmore thus the Brewers are counting on Skidmore to help them into the playoffs. The fifth place Thoroughbreds (7-6-4, 1-2-2 Liberty, 5 points) host Union tomorrow and will make the playoffs outright with wins in their final two games.

Down 1-0 after a first half penalty kick, the Brewers evened the score in the 67th minute with a header by freshman Adrien Demelier on a rebound off the crossbar from a shot by junior Sam Erlichson McCarthy.

Doug Yeates put Skidmore on the board first with a penalty kick at the 29:01 mark. Yeates beat Vassar keeper Ryan Grimme low on the penalty kick after being fouled in the box.

Although neither team delivered the go-ahead goal through remainder of the period and two overtimes, Vassar held a decisive offense advantage with 24 shots to Skidmore's eight and five corner kicks to one for Skidmore.

In an aggressive and physical bout, the two teams combined for 45 fouls and six yellow cards.

Nick Peterson finished with seven saves for Skidmore and Grimme (3-5-1) made five stops for Vassar. Demelier scored his second goal of the season and Erlichson McCarthy registered his second assist.
