DANBURY, CT (October 23, 2010) – In playing perhaps its best match of the 2010 season, the Vassar College women's volleyball team defeated Western Connecticut 3-1 (25-19, 26-24, 22-25, 28-26) in the opening match of the opening match of the Colonial Classic Volleyball Tournament Friday night at Feldman Arena.
The win was Vassar's third straight, the longest streak of the season, and improves the Brewers to 13-10. Vassar plays at the Colonial Classic on Saturday against Rivier at 11:30 a.m. and Colby Sawyer at 2:00 p.m. WestConn falls to 21-8 and will play Colby Sawyer at 9:00 a.m. and Rivier at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
The fourth set proved to be a hard-fought battle and the deciding set of the match. With the score tied 12-12, WestConn won the next three points for a 15-12 lead. The Colonials extended that lead to 22-17, but the Brewers answered with a 6-1 run to tie the match at 23-23. After a WestConn timeout, the hosts got a kill for a 24-23 lead, but the Brewers won the next two points to earn a match-point. Two kills gave WestConn a 26-25 lead, but Vassar won the final three points to take the game 28-26.
WestConn dominated play early in the third set, taking a 12-4 lead and increased that to 22-13. Vassar went on an 8-1 run to tighten the set, but the Colonials closed out the set with a 25-22 victory.
The second set was tied at 8-8. Tthe Brewers then won three straight points for a 11-8 lead. WestConn tied the match at 21-21, but serving errors proved fatal for the hosts down the stretch as they served into the net at both 22-22 and 24-24, and Vassar took the second set 26-24 for a 2-0 lead in the match.
In game one with the score tied 5-5, Vassar went on a 10-2 run to take a 15-7 lead. WestConn managed to climb back to within three late at 22-19, but Vassar took the game's last three points for a 1-0 lead in the match.

Amy Bavosa led the Brewers with 14 kills and sophomore
Chloe McGuire had 13 kills. Sophomore setter Hilary Koenings had 55 assists and senior
Chelsea Mottern had 16 digs.
Natalie Crosby led WestConn with 16 kills, followed by Paxton Thornton with 15. Senior Sammie Hathaway handed out 48 assists, and junior Kelley Collins had 32 digs.
