Women's Hoops Notches First-Ever Win Over Union, 59-46

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 30, 2010) – The Vassar College women's basketball team earned its first ever victory over Union College in a 59-46 Liberty League contest on Saturday at the Athletics and Fitness Center, improving to its best league record since 2001.

The Brewers (7-9, 3-4) host Eastern Connecticut State this Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. Vassar is now tied for fifth place in the Liberty League with St. Lawrence. The Dutchwomen take a 6-11, 4-3 record on the road Tuesday at 6:00 p.m against a Skidmore team that is tied for Liberty League first place, coming off a recent upset of RPI.

The first 10 minutes featured eight lead changes until Vassar's offense started rolling, driven by senior forward Emily Haeuser and sophomore guard Brittany Parks. A layup by Haeuser in the seventh minute increased the Brewer lead by five to 17-12. Union senior guard Rachel Titcomb responded with a jumper to bring the Dutchmen within three points. Parks and Union sophomore forward Rachel Beaulac traded three-pointers to keep the lead to three points at 20-17.

Union would come no closer than three points for the remainder of the game as the Brewers orchestrated a six-point run capped off by a Haeuser jumper that extended the lead to 26-17.

Haeuser dominated the first half of play with 15 points and five rebounds, showcasing her versatility from the perimeter and inside. The only player to reach the line in the half, Haeuser hit 5-of-8 free throws, crucial to Vassar's 30-24 halftime lead.

In the second half, Vassar's defense protected its lead and helped it grow to 18 points following a 14-3 run with 10 minutes to play. The Brewers capitalized on Dutchwomen miscues, scoring 15 points on 12 turnovers in the half.

Haeuser led Vassar with 24 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks notching her seventh double-double of the season. In the early minutes of play, Haeuser grabbed her 785th career rebound, passing Carleen Aubee, class of '03, as the all-time leading rebounder.

Parks contributed 11 points, four assists, and four steals while freshman Olivia Westbrook-Gold chipped in eight points. The Brewers looked sharp, committing a season-low 11 turnovers.

For Union, Beaulac shot 3-4 from 3-point range for nine points. No other Dutchwoman scored more than five points.
