Young Women's Rugby Squad Kicks Off Season With Win Over New Paltz

Keri Peacock had three tries in Vassar's season-opening win

NEW PALTZ, NY (September 5, 2009) -- There was a good deal of trepidation at the New Paltz campus today, probably on account of the high number of new faces in the Vassar ranks. The squad returned just 13 players and although now there are 39 one could hardly argue that they are experienced! But the Brewers began their Fall 2009 season with a win against local rivals New Paltz. There will certainly be stronger teams ahead as the divisional games arrive in the third week of September but on face value Vassar could fashion a solid squad. The leadership has been enthusiastic and hard working and with the incentive of a tour to Ireland this team will probably earn the nickname "Renaissance Squad."

Vassar College Women 24 v New Paltz Women 15
Tries: Keri Peacock (3) & Emma Backe (1).
Cons: Kate Hancock (2).
After a long warm-up the Brewers took the field against the Hawks of SUNY New Paltz and were a little sluggish to react. New Paltz rucked strongly and moved the ball wide quickly but there was no way through the Vassar centers. The return of Morandi Hurst at 13 and the addition of freshman Emma Backe proved a useful unit. It was a wonderful start for Backe as she scored a try to put Vassar up 15-0. No doubt the freshman will be grinning from ear to ear all this week. She is a good tackler and New Paltz were thwarted time and time again.

At 10 Lorraine DeGraffenreidt ran the show and although her best position may be 12 she was always a threat. Vassar experimented with players moving around, both in the forwards and the backs. Much like the Guinness Premiership teams in the U.K. Vassar used this early season non-divisional game as a means to assess talent as much as get a result.

Support for Vassar included it's usual dedicated supporters plus the Wiechmann Family from South Dakota and the Bober Family. No doubt in the weeks to come alumni will purchase their season tickets and be here in numbers for the home games.

Vassar's number 9, Keri Peacock, opened her account this year with 3 tries as she carved through the New Paltz defense. She most certainly deserves every score she gets for she tackles anything that moves and is all over the field.

Just as impressive was the commitment and effort of the rookies. It is so thrilling to see them get their first rugby experience and know that with lots of hard work they can be a part of the tradition that is Vassar Women's Rugby. Thank you for your trust, your bravery, and effort. In 7 months time you will be in Ireland representing the college and showing that you can play this game and play it well.
Overall record: 1-0-0
Next week: Saturday September 12, 2009 versus RPI & Purchase at Vassar College Farm, kick-off 12:00 p.m. & 1:00 p.m.
