UNION, NJ (September 5, 2009) – Kean University used a 20-1 shot advantage and got four goals from senior forward Brittany Gibbs to hand the Vassar field hockey team a 5-0 non-conference loss Saturday afternoon.
The Brewers, now 0-2, will host the 21st annual Betty Richey Tournament next Saturday and Sunday at Weinberg Field. Vassar meets Elms College in the opening game at Noon. Manhattanville and Massachusetts Institute of Technology play the second game at 2:00 p.m. Kean (0-2) next faces FDU-Florham on September 9.
Kean controlled the game, getting 12 of its 20 shots in the second half. The Cougars held an 11-1 advantage in penalty corners.
Vassar was able to get off only one shot against Kean, that effort coming from senior
Jordan Friedmann.
The Cougars broke out to a quick 1-0 lead scoring 1:51 into the game when Gibbs pushing her rebound shot past Vassar goalie
Rachel Horwitz. Gibbs led Kean into halftime with a 2-0, notching her second goal off a pass in front of the cage that she tipped in.
Gibbs tallied her third goal in similar fashion to the game's first – just 1:49 into the second period – for a 3-0 Kean lead. Junior midfielder Kelly Mataya assisted on three of Gibbs' goals.
Vassar split its goaltending duties between Horwitz and freshman
Rachel Clarkin-Breslin. Each player made four saves each.
