ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON (September 16, 2009) – With freshman
Zander Mrlik involved in every goal for the Vassar College men's soccer team, the Brewers picked up a 3-1 win on the road against Bard College on Wednesday evening. Mrlik added two assists off his cannonball throw-ins, and chipped in with a goal for good measure.
The Brewers break a two-game losing skid to improve to 4-2 and will return to action when they host Drew University on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. The Raptors fall to 3-3, 1-0 in the Skyline Conference.
Vassar scored two first half goals and held a 3-0 lead until there were less than ten minutes to play. The Brewers first struck in the 21st minute as senior
Brian Bianchetti headed in his team-leading fourth goal of the season off a Mrlik throw-in. Mrlik spearheaded Vassar's second goal in similar fashion with under five minutes to play in the first frame, this time with senior
Chris Nieminski heading in his second goal of the season. The assist represented Mrlik's team-leading fourth, all of which have come off throw-ins.
Mrlik then capped the impressive evening with his first collegiate goal, heading in a corner kick off the foot of sophomore
Harrison Freund in the 80th minute. It was Freund's third assist of the season. The Raptors answered less than two minutes later with a goal by Nick Gorski, assisted by Casey Jackson-Asprooth, but it was too little too late for the home team.
The Brewers outshot the Raptors 21-7, and took eight corner kicks to Bard's one. Nieminski led Vassar with three shots, two on goal. Senior keeper
Jake London earned the win in goal with one save, improving to 4-2. Freshman keeper
Gary Clauss saw time in the second half as well. Bard's Devon Connelly made four saves in the loss.
