Box Score

MAHWAH, NJ (September 15, 2009) – Ramapo College avenged last season's 3-1 loss against the Vassar field hockey team by racing out to a 4-0 lead on the strength of three goals by sophomore forward Jayne Manigrasso, to defeat the Brewers 5-1 in non-conference game Tuesday afternnon.

Vassar, now 1-4 on the season, will next travel to Bryn Mawr College for the Seven Sisters Tournament this Saturday and Sunday. The Brewers will face Wellesley on Saturday and Smith College on Sunday. Both games are at noon. Ramapo improves to 2-3 on the season and next hosts Western Connecticut State College on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

The weary Brewers were playing their third game in four days. Vassar was coming off a hard-fought 3-2 loss to Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the finals of the Betty Richey Tournament on Sunday and managed only four shots on goal, two in each half.

One of those shots did result in a goal, as sophomore Maura McCarthy tallied her second goal of the season in the game's 58th minute. Unfortunately for Vassar, the Roadrunners had already built a strong 4-0 lead at that point. Vassar freshman Elizabeth Annis had two shots on the afternoon and senior Jennie McAllister had one. Ramapo senior goalie Megan Tierney had two saves in the game and Clarkin-Breslin made four stops.

The Roadrunners had only 12 shots in the contest, but made the most of their attacks. Ramapo scored twice in the first half, on goals by Manigrasso and freshman forward Victoria Ahlers. Manigrasso opened the second half by scoring her second goal of the game off Vassar freshman goalie Rachel Clarkin-Breslin just 1:07 into play. She earned her third goal in the 45th minute. Freshman teammate Rachel Wintermute closed out the scoring with a goal with 10 seconds left in the contest.
