Men's Rugby By Head Coach Tony Brown

Brown Powers Past Men's Rugby

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 11, 2009) -- For 50 minutes this was a good quality game with the visitors to the Vassar campus putting together good attacking patterns. Last year Vassar travelled to Rhode Island and defeated Brown 31-17 and the Ivy League boys were intent on redemption. But some staunch Vassar defense made for compelling viewing and time and again in the first half Brown were frustrated. They did manufacture one try and a penalty and led 8-0 but Vassar scored what looked a good try in the corner only to have it called back for a final forward pass. So the half ended 8-0.

It is rare that Vassar doesn't get on the scoresheet so credit the Brown University team with not only holding their line but also racking up an impressive score for themselves. Vassar had no answer for the power and organization that Brown displayed. But this was certainly not a one-sided affair as Vassar created quite a few chances and the contest was very even for long periods. But as the game wore on and tackles missed it was Brown that upped the ante. They played with purpose, direction, and vigor and ran out more than solid winners by the end.

Pen: Adam Steel (1).

The Vassar second XV fared little better than their "A" side counterparts and again it was slipshod tackling that let Brown dominate the pace and pattern of the game. Up front the forwards needn't to get a better hit at the scrums. In the back division there was tremendous effort but without good technique it is usually to no avail. It is all very well to get into position to tackle but then one needs to finish the job i.e. wrap and hold the opponent. Time and time and time again a hit was made and the ball carrier just kept running.
