TROY, NY (November 14, 2009) – Against tough competition, the Vassar College women's swimming and diving team put forth a solid performance, but fell to Rensselaer 186-114 on Saturday.
The Brewers fall to 1-1 and will host back-to-back meets this upcoming weekend, with Pace University on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and SUNY New Paltz on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
Despite the final score, interim head coach Paul Kueterman was pleased with his team's effort against RPI.
“We had some tremendous swimming today, with a lot of people dropping their times from last week's win over Skidmore,” said Kueterman. “We had a great week of practices and although we didn't get the win on paper, we had some really great swims.”
Last week's Liberty League Performer of the Week, junior
Samantha Jones continued to swim well, with wins in the 100 Back (1:03.14) and 50 Free (25.89) and a second place finish in the 200 Back (2:18.09). Also coming off a Liberty League honor, as Rookie of the Week, freshman
Shannon Sara won the 200 Free (2:00.39) and placed second in the 100 Breast (1:14:14) and 500 Free (5:27.56). Senior
Jordana Jantze picked up a win in the 100 Free in 57.33. Although she did not take home a win, sophomore
Caroline Shannon had a strong day, placing second in the 200 Fly – an event she does not normally swim – in 2:24.59, and also earning a second place finish in the 200 Breast (2:35.36).
“We had our regular contributors put in the strong swims we expect from them, and we had some other people significantly lower their times,” said Kueterman, noting in particular freshmen
Alexandra Hughes (200 Back, 100 Fly),
Sydnie Alquist (200 Free, 100 Free) and junior
Melisa Brower (100 Back, 200 Back, 200 IM).
