ROCHESTER, NY (October 9, 2009) – Junior
Jessica Lance sliced into the University of Rochester's 2-0 lead with a penalty corner goal with three minutes left in the game and nearly pulled off a game-tying goal with no time remaining, but the Yellowjackets defense held strong and the Brewer field hockey team lost 2-1 in Liberty League action Friday afternoon.
The loss drops Vassar to 2-11, 0-4. The Brewers face William Smith on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Rochester, now winners of three straight, improve to 6-5 overall, 2-2 in the league and will host Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
With Rochester sitting comfortably with a 2-0 lead and the final minutes ticking away, the Brewers moved to the offensive. Held scoreless and without a shot in the first 67 minutes, Vassar earned a penalty corner late in the game. With just over two minutes left, Vassar's senior midfielder

Maura McCarthy and her pass deep into the circle found Lance who deflected it past Rochester goaltender Danielle Pearson at 68:00.
Vassar earned another penalty corner with no time remaining on the clock, but the Rochester defense was able to clear the ball and secure the win.
Sophomore midfielder Shayna McKie scored less than three minutes into the game to put Rochester on the board. Allison Beardsley beat two defenders and sent a pass from the right wing that found McKie alone in front of the net.
With just over 16 minutes remaining in the first half, Amanda Case took a penalty corner directed at Anna Dobrzynski. Dobrzynski fired a shot from the left wing that beat Vassar junior goalie
Rachel Horwitz, who made a career-high 11 saves in the game.
